Library Policies: Law Library Access

University of Memphis Community

Members of the UM community from outside the law school can use the library facilities with no appointment necessary. 

  • Please bring your University issued ID card when you visit the Law Library.

  • All UM Community users must check in at the front security desk with your ID.

  • While in the library, UM Community Users are free to make use of all print materials, including government documents, as well as selected electronic resources either through their personal devices connected to the um wifi network, or the guest terminals located on the main floor of the library near the circulation and reference desk.
  • UM Community Users may check out any circulating materials .  
  • Librarians and library staff are available to assist with finding library materials and explaining their function and use, but cannot provide legal advice or guidance.
  • Please observe the posted noise level guidelines.
  • Please be courteous to other library users and law school staff and faculty. We reserve the right to have security remove disruptive users from the premises.

Guest Users

Members of the public not currently affiliated with the University that wish to use library resources may request a guest pass.

  • A Guest pass request can be submitted online by visiting our Online Guest Request page or by calling (901) 678-2426. 
  • If you believe your research will take more than one day, multiple days may be sent in a single request.
  • Guest passes may be requested up to 2 weeks in advance.
  • Please request your pass before 8:00 PM the day before your visit.
  • In exigent circumstances, library staff may allow same-day access for individuals unfamiliar with our access policies.
  • All guest users must sign in at the front security desk and present a photo ID with a name matching the request.
  • The Law Library is not available to guest users for non-legal research or studying.
  • While in the library, guest users are free to make use of all print materials, including government documents, as well as selected electronic resources through the guest terminals located on the main floor of the library near the circulation and reference desk.
  • Guest users may not check out or remove books from the collection.  
  • Librarians and library staff are available to assist with finding library materials and explaining their function and use, but cannot provide legal advice or guidance.
